Hey all. Eli is doing a project for school on interviewing someone a lot older to find out how things were different when they were growing up. He sent questions to mom to answer. I won't list the questions, but write what she sent. I thought you might be interested in her answers. I don't know of anyone except Butch Cassidy who was famous- you may not want to admit that he was a distant relative. My entire childhood was spent in Gunlock, Utah. We had a two bedroom, one bathroom home. I shared a bedroom with my older sister. I only had one sibling. My grandparents on my dad's side lived just down the street from us. I spent a lot of time with them. I loved grandma's fresh homemade bread, homemade butter and buttermilk, homemade noodles and chicken. She made everything. I belonged to the LDS church. We went to church as a family on Sundays and had lots of fun activities for young people on weekdays. We didn't have chores written down- we just did work that needed to be done. Some of them were mowing lawns, planting the garden and hoeing weeds, cleaning house, washing dishes by hand, hanging out clothes, etc. My grandfather was a farmer and we got to help haul hay, hoe weeds, harvest the fruits and fields of all kinds of melons. It was hard work but lots of fun. My mother was postmistress in out town for 30 years and worked in the post office located next to our property. It was great because she could always be home. I didn't have a paying job until I was able to drive- then I had a job in St. George as a waitress. We always had a radio and listened to programs like "The Lone Ranger" and "Our Miss Brooks." We finally got a black and white TV with one channel. My dad bought a new car for the family when I was old enough to drive. It was great to drive to school and to work! I had lots of free time as a child and could go anywhere I wanted. I played a lot with friends. We liked softball, dodge ball, red rover, kick the can, swimming and wading in the creek and riding horses. As a family, we liked to go swimming at a nice pool, go out in the hills, camp out, spend holidays with extended family. Our family ate regular meals together- lots of fresh vegetables, fruits and venison. Our foods were homemade. We canned fruits and vegetables for use in the winter. School was fun when I was thirteen! We didn't have computers and calculators. We learned to write, do arithmetic, read everything the old fashioned way. Girls always had to wear dresses to school. We would usually go to dances and other activities as a group. We usually didn't single date until about 16 years. People often got married younger-some at age 19. Movies the were different- they would be G-rated by today's standards. Dances were fun- we learned to dance different dances as a couple. We had the radio and newspapers to help us to know what was going on in the world. My pets? I always had kittens to play with, at lease one dog, two parakeets, a pet lamb and a pet bunny. At one time, we had a pet lion, and we always had horses to ride. Happy reading :) Enjoy!!!!

Jean Holt Miller (April 26, 1938 - June 28, 2010)

Jean Holt Miller

Washington, UT - Our beloved Jean Holt Miller passed on to our Heavenly Father's presence on June 28, 2010. Jean has bravely fought cancer and its debilitating effects for the last 6 years, with her husband constantly by her side. She passed peacefully away at home surrounded by her loving husband of 53 years, her children and grandchildren. Jean was born on April 26, 1938 to Wilford Milton and Olive Webb Holt. She was raised in Gunlock, Utah, graduated from Dixie High School and attended Dixie College. She married William LaMar Miller on June 7, 1957 in Gunlock, Utah. On October 6, 1977, they were sealed for time and eternity in the St. George LDS Temple. Jean spent a wonderful life growing up in Gunlock, Utah with her parents and loving grandparents. Jean loved the outdoors, having learned her excellent hunting, horsemanship, and outdoor skills at an early age from her father. Jean could be found every October at the family deer hunting camp. Jean has lived in Washington, Utah since her marriage and has loved doing yard work and keeping her home and yards attractive and beautiful. She co-founded LeJeans Draperies in the early 1970's and spent over 35 years as an interior designer, specializing in window and wall treatments. Many of her exquisitely sewn window coverings are still found hanging in homes in the St. George area. Jean was also locally famous for her wonderful homemade candies. Jean loved to travel with her husband LaMar, having made many trips throughout the world. Jean was an avid 4-wheeler, being very adept at keeping up with LaMar. She loved spending time at the family cabin on Kanarra Mountain. Jean and LaMar have traveled to many places in their RV. They have enjoyed many trips with their friends, children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and she loved spending time with them. Jean loved to serve others. Very seldom would one find her relaxing in a chair. She was always working, which is something she found great joy in doing. She performed many acts of unselfish, anonymous service to others and was a wonderful example of Christ-like living. Jean is survived by her husband, LaMar of Washington, Utah; parents Milt and Olive Holt of Gunlock, Utah, sister Millie (Joe) Sanders of Forest Grove, Oregon, children Kendall (Dana) and Russell (Chris) of St. George, Utah; and seven grandchildren. The family would like to extend special thanks to Jean's dear friends and caregivers, Nely Figueroa and Ruby Parry for their loving service to her over the last several years. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Main Street Chapel, 82 North Main, Washington, Utah. Visitations will be on Thursday, July 1st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah and on the morning of the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will be in the Washington City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
